Ceramic Catalysts

Most vehicle catalytic converters have a ceramic carrier. The honeycomb-shaped monolith is covered with a “washcoat” in which the catalytically active precious metals platinum, rhodium and palladium are embedded. For a precise valuation, these valuable materials must be extracted with as little residue as possible.

The delivered catalysts are cut, ground and homogenized. In order to avoid losses, the extracted dust is fed back into the process. We take representative samples from the fine powder of the monoliths, from which we determine the precious metal content in our in-house laboratory.

Metal Catalysts

In addition to ceramic catalysts, there are metal catalysts, which are comparatively rare. Their share in the total amount is less than 10%. They usually contain the same amount of valuable precious metals as ceramic catalysts. Due to the more complex recycling process, immediate processing and analysis are currently not feasible. However, we have future-oriented options ready for you.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)

A particulate filter for diesel vehicles consists of a honeycomb-like ceramic structure that is often coated with precious metals such as platinum. After a certain period of time, the filter closes up with ash and soot, loses its functionality and has to be replaced. We check the filters for their precious metal content and subject them to a process similar to that of the ceramic catalysts. This enables us to recover the metals with almost no loss.

Lambda Probe

The lambda probe is a small component that is used to optimize the exhaust gas flow regulated by the catalytic converter. It essentially consists of a special ceramic body, the surface of which is provided with gas-permeable platinum electrodes. Despite the small quantities of precious metal, we also buy these sensors, collect them separately and recycle them with the utmost care.

FACILITY

LOCATION

Elemental Benelux B.V. operates on 1300 sqm in one of the safest industrial areas in Limburg. Modern security systems, security guards as well as 4k camera systems ensure the highest level of security for the material of our customers. Equipped with new machinery as well as highest quality standards, Elemental benelux is able to provide the best possible service to customers and potential customers.

MACHINERY

State of the art machinery ensures the highest quality in the supply chain and value chain to guarantee 100% recovery of the provided and valuable goods. Starting with decanning we are ensuring fast and save decanning of spent autocatalysts. Using McIntire 403 as the industry standard we can assure problem free decanning. Three ballmills ensure the constant milling option with a total potential volume of 5 mt monolith per day, 30 mt per week and 120 mt per month. Sampling and sample preparation is also made inhouse and thus, according to Elemental quality standards. Following the recycling process, initial XRF analysis and ICP analys will follow to recover all potential metals and resources.

NETWORK

Mainly platinum, palladium and rhodium, stimulate carbon monoxides, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides contained in the exhaust fumes to react, which results in reduced emissions of harmful compounds. The content of PGM in automotive catalyst inserts on average varies between 0.2-0.3%, this level depends on the age of a car and the type of fuel burned. Catalyst recycling processes are aimed at recovering precious metals for reuse. Recycling of automotive catalysts enables recovery of up to 95% of platinum content, it also saves significant amounts of energy as compared to traditional mining (processing of 1 ton of spent catalysts prevents the extraction of 150 tons of ore or alternatively 400 tons of waste rock).

Elemental Benelux B.V. has asserted itself in the market thanks to its specialization, its commitment and as part of the Elemental Group, the international group of precious metal recyclers. With this strong and versatile partner behind them, our experts can act even more confidently.
For you that means capital strength, security, flexibility, transparency.

Precious metal recycling is cross-generational. Raw materials are scarce and valuable resources need to be recovered. Economic success will only be possible in the future if it is in balance with the environment. With us you get a global network and individual
Advice in one.

Hand in hand we secure the next generation.

CAREER

WHY WORK WITH US ?

Elemental Benelux B.V. is a new industry player in the market of precious metals recycling. As member of the Elemental Group, the company has a strong background with an extensive knowledge and highly motivated professionals. To the earliest convenience the company is looking to fill open positions in its plant in Weert, Netherlands.

OPEN POSITIONS

  • Internals Sales (m/f/d)

Constructed of a metal block made of layers of corrugated foil, forming a channel network, which, like in the case of a ceramic catalyst insert, contains PGM. >> More

  • Production (m/f/d)

In simple terms, they consist of a stainless steel housing and a ceramic insert whose surface was sprayed with metals from the platinum group metals (PGM).
